Easy & Fun Duplo Block Games for Daycare
At Little Duck Family Child Care, we love activities that are simple to set up, fun for all ages, and packed with learning—and Duplo blocks check every box. These chunky, colourful blocks are perfect for little hands and big imaginations, making them one of our go-to toys for daily play.
I wrote a great piece here about why Duplo Blocks are Our Favourite!
If you’re looking for easy, engaging games you can play with Duplo blocks in a daycare setting, here are some of our absolute favourites!
🎨 1. Colour Match & Build
How to play:
- Call out a colour (like red, blue, or yellow).
- Children race to find blocks of that colour and build something with them.
Make it easier: Lay out colour piles for younger kids.
Make it harder: Ask them to build something specific using only that colour.
Skills learned:
✔ Colour recognition
✔ Listening skills
✔ Creativity
🔢 2. Count & Stack Towers
How to play:
- Ask each child to build a tower with a certain number of blocks (e.g., “Build a tower with 5 blocks!”).
- Count together as they stack.
Fun twist: Compare towers—who has more? Who has less?
Skills learned:
✔ Counting
✔ Number recognition
✔ Early math concepts
🏁 3. Duplo Building Race
How to play:
- Give kids a simple challenge like:
- Build the tallest tower
- Build a house
- Build a bridge
- Set a timer (30–60 seconds) and let them go!
Skills learned:
✔ Problem-solving
✔ Time awareness
✔ Teamwork (if done in pairs)
🧩 4. Copycat Builder
How to play:
- Build a small structure using a few blocks.
- Have the children try to copy it exactly.
Make it fun: Let kids take turns being the “teacher” and building something for others to copy.
Skills learned:
✔ Memory
✔ Focus
✔ Spatial awareness
🚗 5. Roll & Build Game
How to play:
- Assign actions to numbers (use a dice if you have one):
- 1 = Add 1 block
- 2 = Add 2 blocks
- 3 = Take 1 away
- 4 = Switch colours
- 5 = Build sideways
- 6 = Start a new tower
Kids take turns rolling and building based on the result.
Skills learned:
✔ Counting
✔ Following directions
✔ Turn-taking
🌈 6. Pattern Play
How to play:

- Ask kids to continue the pattern.
Next level: Let them invent their own patterns for friends to follow.
Skills learned:
✔ Pattern recognition
✔ Critical thinking

🎭 8. Storytime Builders
How to play:
- Tell a short story (farm, zoo, family, etc.).

🧼 Keeping Our Duplo Blocks Clean & Safe
Let’s be real—kids are amazing, but they also bring germs everywhere 😅 That’s why keeping our toys clean is just as important as the play itself.
At Little Duck Family Child Care, one of the simplest and most effective ways we clean and sanitize our Duplo blocks is:
🛁 The Tub Method (Every 2 Weeks):
- Fill the bathtub with warm water.
- Add a small amount of bleach (follow safe dilution guidelines—about 1/4 cup per full tub of water).
- Toss in the Duplo blocks and let them soak for a few minutes.
- Give them a gentle swish around to remove dirt and germs.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Lay them out on towels to fully air dry.
This quick routine helps keep germs down and ensures our little ones are always playing with clean, safe toys.
✨ Tip: Always keep cleaning supplies out of reach of children and supervise the process carefully.
💛 Why These Games Work So Well
At our daycare, we’re always looking for ways to make learning feel like play—and Duplo games do exactly that. They’re:
- ✔ Easy to set up (no prep required!)
- ✔ Adaptable for all ages
- ✔ Great for independent or group play
- ✔ Perfect for building social and developmental skills
Most importantly, they bring joy, laughter, and creativity into our everyday routine.
🐥 Final Thoughts
At Little Duck Family Child Care, Duplo blocks aren’t just toys—they’re tools for learning, connection, and imagination. With just a handful of blocks and a little creativity, you can turn everyday playtime into meaningful learning experiences.
