Our Favourite Board Books & Why Rotating Them Monthly Matters

At Little Duck Family Child Care, books are more than just part of our daily routine—they’re part of how we connect, learn, and grow together. There’s something really special about gathering a group of little ones, opening a book, and watching their faces light up with curiosity, excitement, and recognition.

Lately, two of our absolute favourites have been It’s Your Birthday and Some Ponies, both by Gibbs Smith. These sweet, simple board books have quickly become well-loved staples in our reading corner—and for good reason.

It’s Your Birthday is full of celebration, joy, and simple language that little ones can easily follow. It’s perfect for helping children understand special moments and routines like birthdays, while also making them feel included and excited.


Some Ponies brings a softer, more rhythmic reading experience. With gentle repetition and adorable imagery, it’s calming and engaging—especially for younger toddlers who are just beginning to explore books.
