Our Favourite Board Books & Why Rotating Them Monthly Matters

At Little Duck Family Child Care, books are more than just part of our daily routine—they’re part of how we connect, learn, and grow together. There’s something really special about gathering a group of little ones, opening a book, and watching their faces light up with curiosity, excitement, and recognition.

Lately, two of our absolute favourites have been It’s Your Birthday and Some Ponies, both by Gibbs Smith. These sweet, simple board books have quickly become well-loved staples in our reading corner—and for good reason.

Why We Love These Books 💛

It’s Your Birthday is full of celebration, joy, and simple language that little ones can easily follow. It’s perfect for helping children understand special moments and routines like birthdays, while also making them feel included and excited.

Some Ponies brings a softer, more rhythmic reading experience. With gentle repetition and adorable imagery, it’s calming and engaging—especially for younger toddlers who are just beginning to explore books.

Both books are sturdy, beautifully designed, and just the right size for tiny hands—which leads us to why board books are such a big deal in daycare settings.

Why Board Books Are Essential in Daycare & at Home 🧸📖

1. Built for Little Hands (and Big Feelings)

Board books are durable. In a daycare environment where books are loved a lot, this matters. They can handle drops, chewing, page flipping (sometimes all at once!), and still stay intact.

2. Encourages Independence

Because they’re easy to hold and flip, children feel confident exploring books on their own. That independence builds early literacy skills without pressure.

3. Supports Early Language Development

Simple words, repetition, and engaging pictures help children connect language to meaning. Reading the same book multiple times (which kids LOVE) strengthens vocabulary and comprehension.

4. Creates Routine & Comfort

Familiar books become part of a child’s emotional world. Whether it’s a calm-down moment, nap routine, or group story time, board books help create consistency and security.

5. Safe for All Ages

No sharp pages, no tearing—just safe, sensory-friendly reading. This makes them perfect for mixed-age daycare settings where babies and toddlers are learning side by side.

Why We Introduce New Board Books Every Month 🌈

Rotating in new board books regularly keeps things fresh, exciting, and developmentally supportive.

Here’s why we make it a priority:

  • Keeps curiosity alive: New books spark new questions and engagement
  • Supports different learning stages: As kids grow, their interests and abilities change
  • Encourages a love of reading: Variety prevents boredom and keeps storytime fun
  • Introduces new themes: Seasons, emotions, animals, routines—books help us explore it all
  • Gives every child a chance to connect: Not every child connects with every book, so variety matters

We don’t replace our favourites—we build on them. Kids still get the comfort of beloved stories like It’s Your Birthday and Some Ponies, while also discovering something new.

Bringing It Home 🏡

You don’t need a full daycare setup to make books a meaningful part of your child’s life. Even at home, rotating a few board books each month can make a big difference. A small basket of “new” (or even just reintroduced) books can feel like a whole new world to a child.

Reading together—even for just a few minutes a day—builds connection, confidence, and a lifelong love of stories.

At the end of the day, it’s not about having a huge library—it’s about creating moments. Snuggled up, flipping pages, laughing at familiar pictures, and discovering something new together.

And honestly? Those are the moments that matter most. 💛📚✨
