Family Child Care VS Daycare Centres What’s The Difference

Choosing child care in British Columbia is a big decision, and for many families it comes down to two main options: family child care (home-based care) and large centre daycare (group child care centres). Both are regulated under provincial guidelines when licensed, but they offer very different experiences for children and families.

You would not believe how many people don’t understand the difference and are shocked when they come for an interview at my home. Here’s a complete breakdown to help you understand the difference, the benefits of each, and why parents might choose one over the other.

Understanding the Two Types of Care in BC

In BC, child care generally falls into two categories: individual or small group care and group centre-based care.

Family Child Care (Home Daycare)

Family child care is provided in a caregiver’s home, often with a small group of children of mixed ages. Family child care is run by mothers and this experience alone is something you cannot train in school. I started my daycare when my kids were 2, 4, and 6. This allowed me to stay home with them and they were able to learn, play, and enjoy life in a safe space among a great group of friends their entire childhood.

Home daycares follow the same strict rules and regulations the big centres do and have regular inspections as well. We have to have our childcare first aid, written policies, floor plan and fire drills, extinguishers serviced, inspection officers check the entire space for safety as well and ensure we do daily and monthly inspections of our own.

Large Centre Daycare

Large daycare centres operate in dedicated facilities (schools, commercial buildings, or community centres) with multiple staff and classrooms divided by age groups.

Licensed programs in BC must follow strict health, safety, staffing, and program regulations set out by the province.

Key Differences at a Glance

The biggest differences come down to size, structure, flexibility, and environment:

  • Group size: Home daycares are small; centres are larger with many children
  • Environment: Home-like vs structured classroom setting
  • Staffing: One main caregiver vs multiple educators
  • Schedule: Flexible vs more structured routines
  • Cost: Typically lower in home care, higher in centres

Benefits of Family Child Care

Family child care offers a warm, personal approach that many families love.

1. More Individual Attention

With fewer children, caregivers can build close relationships and tailor care to each child’s needs.  Your child is being raised as one of the family now. It is always a great idea to check how your provider deals with discipline, screen time, daily activities, and structure.

2. Home-Like Environment

Children are in a cozy, familiar setting that can feel less overwhelming, especially for infants and toddlers. As moms themselves they know how to be comforting and caring in a different way than most who don’t have kids. It’s one thing to go to school and train to care for a child but it’s a whole different thing to recognize emotions and behaviours that mothers recognize and tackle every day.

3. Mixed Age Groups

Siblings can stay together, and younger children can learn from older ones, creating a family-style dynamic. Parents usually appreciate the fact that their child can learn about different stages of childhood especially for only children. Not only that but smaller kids end up walking and talking faster as they are carefully studying the older children and learning from them.

4. Flexibility

Schedules, routines, and even potty training approaches tend to be more adaptable. Most home daycares still stick to a basic schedule and keep it the same for the most part but can easily make changes if needed. Drop offs and pickups are usually flexible as well as attendance which makes it great for parents who have days where they want to sleep in, appointments they want to drop off or pickup early for and days they want to take off just to spend with their baby.

5. Lower Cost

Home-based care often has less overhead, making it more affordable for families. Prices are quite affordable now that the government is pitching in with benefits to pay your childcare fees. You pay one monthly flat rate in my home weather you take days off, use all the days, drop off at different times etc, so even if you or your baby got sick and took the week off the fee is the fee regardless because you are paying for your spot (which is pretty cheap) not attendance.

Why Parents Choose It

Many parents prefer family child care because it feels personal, nurturing, and consistent. For younger children especially, having one primary caregiver can create a strong sense of security. The fact that you are trusting your child with a mom that chose to do this job says a lot. Many moms are tired of taking care of their own kids so if a mom chooses to do childcare there is a reason and it’s most likely the fact that she is a kick ass mom and wants to help others raise their kids.

Benefits of Large Centre Daycare

Large daycare centres provide a more structured, educational environment.

1. Structured Learning & Curriculum

Centres often follow age-appropriate programs with planned activities that support development and school readiness.

2. Socialization Opportunities

Children interact with larger groups of peers, helping build social skills and friendships.

3. Multiple Staff & Reliability

If one staff member is absent, others can step in, so closures are less likely.

4. Professional Training

Staff are often trained early childhood educators who meet ongoing education requirements.

5. Facilities & Resources

Centres typically have larger indoor and outdoor spaces, equipment, and learning materials designed for group care.

Why Parents Choose It

Parents often choose centres for their consistency, reliability, and educational focus, especially as children approach preschool age.

What Parents Say (Real Perspectives)

Many families are torn because both options offer real value. Community discussions highlight this balance:

“You get more one-on-one attention in home daycare… but centres offer great activities and development.”

“Home daycare has consistency… centres have backup staff and stay open.”

These perspectives show that the “best” choice often depends on your child’s personality and your family’s needs.

Which One Is Right for Your Family?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. The right choice depends on what matters most to you:

  • Choose family child care if you value a small, nurturing, flexible environment
  • Choose a large daycare centre if you want structure, socialization, and reliability

Many families even switch between the two as their child grows.

Final Thoughts

Both family child care and large centre daycare in BC can provide safe, loving, and enriching environments when properly licensed and operated. The key is finding a place where your child feels comfortable, supported, and happy.

At the end of the day, it’s not about which option is “better” overall. It’s about which one is better for your child and your lifestyle right now.
